KVK works on the mandates of….
ü Conducting 'On Farm Tests' for identifying technologies in terms of location specific sustainable land use system. ü Organising 'Front Line Demonstrations' on various crops to generate production data and feed back information. ü Acting as a knowledge and resource hub for the district on agriculture and allied sector ü Organising training to update the extension personnel with emerging advances in agricultural research on regular basis. ü Organising short and long term vocational training courses in agriculture and allied vocations for the farmers and rural youth with emphasis on 'learning by doing' for higher production on farms and generating self-employment.
Mitraniketan is a Non Governmental Organization founded by Shri.K.Viswanathan in 1955 with an avowed mission of progress of the society through the total development of individuals (www.mitraniketan.org). Mitraniketan Krishi Vigyan Kendra is the Farm Science Centre of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) for Thiruvananthapuram District and was established in 1979 at Mitraniketan to work for transferring agricultural and allied technologies to farmers, rural youth and extension functionaries of Thiruvananthapuram district. The KVK won 'Best KVK Award' instituted by Indian Council of Agricultural Research for the biennium 1998-2001 for the commendable service rendered to the farming community of Thiruvananthapuram district.
The Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) which meets every six months guides the KVK to function according to the above mandates. Director, Mitraniketan acts as the Chairman of SAC. Its members include an esteemed panel comprising of Zonal Project Director of Zone VIII, ICAR, Director of Extension, Kerala Agricultural University, District Heads of Agriculture and Allied Departments, Representatives from neighbouring ICAR Institutes, NABARD, Lead Bank, Media and Progressive farmers. Programme Coordinator of KVK acts as the Member Secretary of SAC. Based on the felt needs special invitees are invited to SAC. Last SAC of KVK was convened on November 28, 2011.
